3, 5:00 am - Kitami (Minamigaoka Forest Park) Early-morning Event It was extremely cold, like we were back in winter. When we got out of our cars, we heard the beautiful call of a Meadow Bunting. There were also the calls of an Eastern Crowned Leaf-Warbler and Eurasian Nuthatch. At the edge of a small pond was a Black-faced Bunting. Another bird that looked like an Oriental Greenfinch flew off and Kurotani-san captured it with his camera, but we still couldn't see the bill clearly; it was either a Crossbill or Pine Grosbeak. Later, Kanrinin identified it as a Crossbill. Further away, we heard the calls of two birds: Brown-headed Thrush? Japanese Thrush? Siberian Thrush? It would have been nice if they called a few times more... [from report by Hanada-san] |

5, 8:00 am - Yobito Birdwatching Trail Event It had been snowing at night with high temperatures during the day no higher than 5°C for a week. You'd think we Okhotsk people would be used to it, but it is tiring by now. We were worried we'd have more of the same today, but it turned out to be a beautiful day with blue skies although still cold. Several nuthatches greeted us at the entrance to the trail with a fascinating variety of calls. It was tough knowing they were the same kind of bird. Then a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker appeared, hard to get a good look at it but we heard its call well enough. We also watched 3 Latham's Snipes flying, while around us on the ground we saw skunk cabbage (Mizubashou), Amur adonis (Fukujusou), and Corydalis ambigua (Ezo-engosaku) in bloom. A Japanese magnolia (Kita-kobushi) had also finally started to bloom. As we walked on, we heard the calls of an Asian Stubtail and Japanese Bush Warbler. Later, we reached the edge of Abashiri Lake and through our scopes could see Common Mergansers, Red-breasted Mergansers, and some ducks. We had turn back on the trail to return to where we started and at the end heard the drumming of a White-backed Woodpecker. [from report] (The English report is here.) |

12, 8:00 am - Takinoue (Kisen Mountain Gorge) Event Not as cold as we thought, but a light rain was falling and we came with our rain gear. At the gathering point in the parking lot of the Keikoku Hotel we able to enjoy a good look at a pair of Russet Sparrows. The call of a Great Spotted Woodpecker could be heard from the nearby larch (Karamatsu) forest. Further away we could hear the call of a Grey-headed Woodpecker. We walked liesurely along the trail through the gorge. The Shokotsu River, full with water from the rain of the previous day, was flowing with tremendous energy. We still could clearly hear the call of a Grey Wagtail. The unseasonably cold weather may have prevented us from seeing any summer birds such as Narcissus Flycatchers or Siberian Blue Robins, but the sound of the river and the fresh air did wonders for the soul. Great people at the hotel and the local nature group "Shokotsu River Association", too. [from report by Hanada-san] |

17, 5:00 am - Kitami (Nakanoshima Park) Early-morning Event The weather was good during the day, but cloudy and cold in the early morning when we met. People were commenting on how cold it was this year, that normally we would start to hear the Cuckoo in a few days. Well, summer birds were indeed starting to come. Some birds even had chicks already. From the bridge we saw the nest of a Carrion Crow where chicks had hatched and were getting food from the parent. It was cute to watch. 18, 12:00~15:00 - Aboard the "Chipashiri" Abashiri Nature Cruise boat on the Sea of Okhotsk Invited by nature photographer Masyuki Miyamoto who served as our guide, 10 of us went on a seabirding cruise out on the sea off Abashiri. From the shore we can see that there are huge flocks of Short-tailed Shearwaters out there, but to see them up close is very exciting. Tens of thousands of them. Easily more than 100,000 in total on the sea. These huge flocks look like islands in the distance. The sound they make when they take off en-masse, running and pushing themselves off the water surface with their webbed feet, is a noisy, wonderous event. Around the flocks of shearwaters we also saw a few Minke whales, Dall's porpoises, and Harbour porpoises. Captain Maeda, who operated the cruiser, was once a whaler in these waters and knew how to get up close without disturbing them. Besides shearwaters, we also saw large flocks of Red-necked Phalaropes. It was easy to quietly get close to these birds, especially around buoys where they fed. We could hear their gentle voices as well. Among them we noticed one female Red Phalarope with summer plumage. They're a bit bigger than the Red-necked and have a thicker bill. There were quite a few Rhinoceros Auklets here and there on the sea. Their plumage was changing from winter to summer, so we could see the differences. We were impressed by the overall respect that Captain Maeda has for these animals and birds, carefully avoiding pressure on them, even turning off the engine when up close. It was wonderful to see the wildlife that exists out in the waters off Abashiri and we thank both Miyamoto-san, who was our guide, and Captain Maeda for this experience. [from report] (An English report with photos on two subsequent seabirding cruises aboard the Chipashiri are here.) |

19, 8:00 am - Bihoro Midori-no-Mura Event Midori-no-Mura is located in hilly woods behind the Bihoro Museum. It's finally a sunny spring day. Skylarks are giving excited displays overhead. The calls of Eastern Crowned Leaf-Warblers come from here and there. A Blue-and-white Flycatcher stood at the top of a tall tree and sang for a long time. Narcissus Flycatchers and Coal Tits were around as well. We walked leisurely among wildflowers that were in bloom. After the event, a museum curator gave us a generous tour of the museum displays which featured the wildlife and history of the Bihoro area. Very impressive. We thank the museum staff and look forward to coming again next year! [from report by Gerazou-san] (More information about the Bihoro Museum is here [opening in a separate window].) |

26, 8:00 am - Oketo Kanoko Dam Event An absolutely beautiful day, we couldn't have asked for better. Warm, like spring was finally here, maybe even early summer! According to some who came early, an osprey had come down to the lake in front of them, grabbed a fish, and carried it away somewhere. Then we saw a Mountain Hawk-Eagle fly by at close range, and there was another one flying high above the mountains. The birds we see out here really are different from the ones we're used to seeing. Then we had a look at ducks on the lake, listened to Stonechats singing nearby, and our event was over in about an hour. But those who stayed saw a Black Woodpecker close by, and then a Brown Dipper and Asian House Martins, so we added those to our list. [from report] |

31, 5:00 am - Kitami (Kyoei Dam) Early-morning Event It's a small dam, but when we stood at around the center of the lake, we heard Little Grebes calling at three different spots. In the past, Moorhens and Coots were also in this lake. If you look carefully along the shore, you might find moorhens. We came hoping to see a Ruddy Kingfisher here, but no luck today.
