This page is dedicated to the theme, "A Year in the Life of Bird Sightings in the Okhotsk Region". The year recorded here is the fiscal year from April 2013 to March 2014. We hope you enjoy the changes in our Okhotsk Hokkaido birdscape through the seasons.
Status & Notes Status data comes from the Ornithological Society of Japan's "Check-list of Japanese Birds" (2012). The statuses in this column apply to Hokkaido as a whole unless indicated otherwise. The OSJ's status abbreviations are: RB = resident breeder; MB = migrant breeder; IB = introduced breeder; CB = casual breeder; FB = former breeder; WV = winter visitor; PV = passage visitor; IV = irregular visitor; AV = accidental visitor. The birders' names or initials are in this column, too. Many include photos with their report. Birder names are not given when sightings occurred as a group at an event (often 20+ sightings at a time), or when the name was not available. Scientific names of birds are given in the Checklist.

You can browse through all the photos at one go, or even view them as a slide show, using the control bar at the bottom of the screen (or possibly the left/right arrows on your computer). When the English or Japanese name is that of a subspecies, it is indicated by "ssp". Many species in Hokkaido are subspecies. The Checklist page provides details [not yet complete].  14, 10:00 am - Tofutsu Lake Ladies' Birdwatching Event We gathered at the new Tofutsu Lake Waterfowl & Wetland Center that opened last year at Swan Park and went first to Heiwa Bridge at the other end of the lake, since birds there are often different from the ones at Swan Park. The weather was cloudy and it was relatively warm, but the wind so strong, we had to set up our scopes on the leeward side of our cars. There was a huge flock of Common Mergansers on the lake, and we saw Black-headed and Glaucous Gulls. White-tailed Eagles flew overhead. The ice on the lake had completely melted and we could see ducks at a distance. Back at the Center, we observed birds from indoor comfort (photo). We saw Teals, Common Goldeneyes, and flying nearby were juvenile White-tailed Eagles. Then it was time for lunch at the Center's Japanese-style room. [from report by Gerazou-san] |

Unfortunately, the weather was bad, it was snowing, the ground was all white, and it was very cold.  21, 8:00 am - Kitami (Notsukeushi Park) Event It was clear today but still very cold. Two days ago there was snow on the ground here, but today it was gone and conditions for watching birds were good. The park was filled with the calls of Eurasian Nuthatches. On a fat tree along the path, a Great Spotted Woodpecker seemed to be building or guarding a nest and shouted warning calls at us. We respectfully left the area and the warning calls stopped. The pond in the park had Common Mergansers, Spot-billed Ducks, Mallards, and Mandarin Ducks, all enjoyable to watch, especially the Mandarins. [from report by Hanada-san] |

 28, 8:00 am - Kitami (Nakanoshima Park) Event It started to snow the previous evening, and this morning was cold with wet snow coming down. Nevertheless, eight people turned up, so we had the event and decided to stay near the cars in case the weather worsened. About 5 cm of snow was on the ground. Grass could be seen at some spots, and at one we saw 2 plovers looking for food. It was a bit far to see for sure what they were, but Kurotani-san took a good photo of them and we then discovered they were Long-billed Plovers. After that the wet snow turned to rain, it got foggy, and our binoculars were of no use anymore. The event lasted about an hour. [from report by Hanada-san] |
